BR Ambedkar Death Anniversary 2025: The nation commemorates the death anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, on December 6 every year. The day is also marked as the Mahaparinirvan Diwas, when Indians pay respect and gratitude to the man who fought for the rights of the Dalit community and against the scourge of untouchability.

Ambedkar dedicated his life to the eradication of inequality and caste-based discrimination.

The Mahaparinirvan Diwas 2025 marks the 70th anniversary of Ambedkar’s passing on December 6, 1956. The word ‘Mahaparinirvan’ comes from the Sanskrit description of Buddhist texts, considered the day Lord Buddha found nirvana after his death.

As Lord Buddha’s ideology and thoughts were very close to Babasaheb Ambedkar’s beliefs, his followers believe he was as influential as Lord Buddha. Many regard Ambedkar as the Buddhist guru for his great service towards eliminating the social malaise of untouchability.

Life and Legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

Born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, Ambedkar identified caste-based discrimination as one of the biggest obstacles to the nation’s social and economic development. He worked tirelessly for the systematic upliftment of the marginalised communities, especially Dalits, women and labourers. He sought transformative measures to address the deep-rooted injustice and crimes endured by the deprived sections of society.

Ambedkar argued for the complete eradication of the caste system for a reformed social order. To empower the oppressed, he proposed measures like reservations in education, employment and politics and launched newspaper Mooknayaka (Leader of the Silent) to amplify the voices of the unheard and ignored.

In 1923, Ambedkar established the Bahishkrit Hitkarini Sabha (Outcastes Welfare Association), a body demanding caste-based sensitivity, equal educational opportunities, economic status and total removal of social inequalities.

Ambedkar took part in movements such as the Mahad March (1927), challenging caste hierarchies and for access to public water and the temple entry movement at Kalaram Temple (1930). He played a pivotal role in the 1932 Poona Pact, replacing separate electorates with reserved seats for Dalits.

It was Ambedkar’s doctoral thesis that inspired the establishment of the Finance Commission of India. His ideas and teachings were also key in framing the guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Act, 1934. Ambedkar was the chairman of the Indian Constitution’s Drafting Committee, whose final draft in 1948 was formally adopted in 1949 with minimal changes. The Constitution is the soul of a secular, democratic and flourishing India we live in today.
