Store-bought options kill both bad and good bacteria, potentially leading to imbalances, bad breath rebound, or gum irritation.

Making a mouthwash at home is easier than you think

Commercial mouthwashes promise minty freshness but often pack alcohol, artificial colours, and harsh chemicals that can dry out your mouth, stain teeth, or disrupt your oral microbiome over time. A homemade version doesn’t have these issues. It uses simple kitchen staples for gentle, antibacterial cleansing that supports natural saliva production and enamel health.

Another factor in making this mouthwash will also cost half the cost of buying it from a store, while reducing waste from plastic bottles. It also lets you control ingredients, so no parabens or synthetic sweeteners. It’s customisable for sensitivity or whitening needs, making it a smarter, eco-friendly swap for daily rinsing.

This recipe to make your own mouthwash at home was shared by content creator Candice Ray, who wanted “to deinfluence” her followers and people on the internet to avoid buying things they don’t need.

Simple Recipe (Makes ~2 Cups, Lasts 1 Month)

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp whole cloves
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 5-6 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 cups water (adjust for desired strength)

Method:

  • Pour boiling water over the cloves and cinnamon sticks in a heatproof jar.
  • Let steep for a few hours or overnight to extract flavours and benefits.
  • Strain the mixture into a clean glass or reused mouthwash bottle.
  • Add peppermint essential oil, shake well, and store in a cool, dark place.
  • Swish 10-20 ml for 30-60 seconds after brushing, twice daily. Discard after 1 month.

Tips for Best Results

If you are going to make the mouthwash at home, adjust the water to make a stronger or milder taste. It is also important to test the essential oils for sensitivity. This rinse complements brushing and flossing but does not replace them.

Why make mouthwash at home?

Store-bought options kill both bad and good bacteria, potentially leading to imbalances, bad breath rebound, or gum irritation. However, a homemade mouthwash that uses natural ingredients harnesses the powers of simple herbs and oils that have antimicrobial properties, like clove’s eugenol for pain relief, cinnamon’s warming antibacterial action, and peppermint’s cooling effect. Research also backs these claims as herbal rinses have shown signs of reducing plaque as effectively as some OTC brands, without the burn.
