Ramadan 2026 Timetable – First Roza Date In India: Considered as a 29-30 day period of spiritual reflection, self-discipline and communal unity, Ramadan is marked by worldwide fasting from dawn to sunset. The day is also marked by prayer and charity, commemorating the revelation of the Quran. It is the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic calendar, culminating in the Eid al-Fitr celebration.
The day starts with a pre-dawn meal, known as suhur (sehari), and ends with a meal to break the fast (iftar), often featuring dates, water and traditional dishes. This whole day fasting is obligatory for healthy, adult Muslims, and involves abstaining themselves from food, drink, smoking, and immoral behaviour during daylight hours.
As believed since time immemorial, this fast is designed to promote spiritual growth, self-purification and empathy for those less fortunate.
Those who are ill, elderly, travelling, pregnant, breastfeeding or menstruating are exempted from fasting.
In addition to fasting, Muslims also engage in a range of spiritual practices throughout the day. They increase their recitation of the Quran and perform special nightly prayers known as Tarawih.
Moon Sighting: The day of intense devotion, where believers aim to foster gratitude and strengthen their connection with Allah, begins with the sighting of the crescent moon. In Saudi Arabia and several Gulf countries, the first Roza is observed a day earlier.
