Everything devotees need to know about Holika Dahan date, puja rituals and significance

Holika Dahan will be performed on March 3, 2026.
Holika Dahan marks the beginning of the Holi festival and symbolises the victory of good over evil. The ritual involves lighting a sacred bonfire, offering prayers, and letting go of negativity while welcoming positivity into life. In 2026, however, many devotees are confused about the correct date because Holika Dahan coincides with a rare lunar eclipse.
When Is Holika Dahan 2026: March 2 Or March 3?
Holika Dahan will be performed on March 3, 2026. Although the full moon (Phalguna Purnima) continues into March 3, a Chandra Grahan (lunar eclipse) and Sutak period fall on that day. Because no auspicious rituals are performed during Sutak, the main Holika Dahan ceremony will take place after that.
As per Drik Panchang, Holika Dahan Muhurat is from 06:22 PM to 08:50 PM on March 3.
Dhulendi (Rangwali Holi) will be celebrated on March 4, 2026.
Holashtak
Holashtak begins on February 24, 2026, and lasts until March 3, 2026. Marriages and other auspicious ceremonies are not performed during this period.
Holika Dahan 2026 Puja Muhurat Timing
According to the Panchang:
Purnima Tithi begins: 5:55 PM, March 2
Purnima Tithi ends: 5:07 PM, March 3
Bhadra Kaal:
Starts: 5:58 PM, March 2
Ends: 5:30 AM, March 3
Traditionally, Holika Dahan should be performed after the Bhadra Kaal.
There is another time to perform Holika Dahan:
5:30 AM to 6:23 AM on March 3 (before Sutak begins)
Why Is Holika Dahan Not Done During A Lunar Eclipse?
A Chandra Grahan occurs on March 3, 2026. The Sutak period begins at 6:23 AM, during which religious rituals are avoided. This is why devotees are advised to complete Holika Dahan later, mainly on the evening of March 3.
What Is The Significance Of Holika Dahan?
Holika Dahan represents the triumph of devotion and righteousness over arrogance and evil. The ritual is rooted in the legend of Prahlad and Holika, symbolising divine protection for those who follow truth and faith. The bonfire represents the destruction of negativity, the purification of the mind and surroundings, and fresh beginnings. Families gather around the fire, offer prayers, and seek blessings for prosperity and protection.
How To Perform Holika Dahan Puja At Home
- Clean the puja area
- Offer coconut, grains, and flowers
- Light the bonfire at the correct muhurat
- Pray for protection from negativity
- Walk around the fire (parikrama)
Why Is Holika Dahan 2026 Special?
This year is unique because Holika Dahan coincides with a lunar eclipse, making timing especially important. Such celestial overlap is rare and has increased public interest and confusion about the correct puja schedule.
