As summer is at the door and many of us have already bought our swimsuits to enjoy the season by the pool, beating the heat in the most fun way possible – in the pool. Before you rush into the pool for some much-needed relaxation away from the heat, do not forget to take care of your skin. The pool water might offer respite, but it can also leave you, especially your skin and even your hair, suffering from chlorine damage if you do not care for it properly. Sadly, most of us don’t even realise the ramifications until after we experience tight, itchy, and dry skin and brittle, dry hair. We spoke to Dr Geetika Mittal Gupta, Dermatologist and Founder, Isaac Luxe, for some tips that can help you enjoy the summer in the water without compromising your skin and hair health.

Rinse immediately
Yes, immediately. The longer chlorine sits on your skin, the more damage it causes to your skin pores. Chlorine also irritates the skin if it sits longer. So, don’t wait until you go home. Find a safe, nearby place to take a quick shower.

Moisturize while your skin is still damp

Watch your skin
Chlorinated pool water strips the skin of sebum, which is the natural protective oil of the body. This can weaken your skin over time and can cause itching, dryness, and increased sensitivity. If you notice a rash developing hours after swimming, apply a cool compress or take a prescribed antihistamine. Anything beyond mid discomfort may need a dermatologist’s attention.

Care for your hair
Chlorine doesn’t just affect the skin; it also strips your hair of its natural moisture. This leaves hair dry, brittle, and prone to breakage. So, after swimming, rinse your hair thoroughly and follow up with a hydrating, sulfate-free shampoo and deep conditioner or hair mask. . If you swim frequently, consider using a swim cap.
