Notably, Mahatma Gandhi, during the Quit India Movement, tasted this sweet and even shared it with fellow freedom fighters. This iconic sweet shop has been serving customers since 1932.

A Taste of Tradition

The ‘Kheer Mohan’ of Chauparan continues to attract both domestic and international visitors. Those travelling on the historic GT Road, constructed by ruler Sher Shah Suri, often make it a point to stop in Chauparan to savour this treat. The shop sees a steady stream of customers, including prominent business figures and politicians who arrange meetings here to enjoy the sweet. The popularity of ‘Kheer Mohan‘ often leads to repeat visits from satisfied customers.

Historical Roots

Established in 1932, this shop selling ‘Kheer Mohan‘ was founded by Vishnu, a Chauparan local. During the Quit India Movement, Mahatma Gandhi visited the shop and enjoyed the sweet alongside other freedom fighters. Initially, ‘Kheer Mohan‘ was a luxury primarily enjoyed by the British due to its cost. Over time, it gained popularity among locals and eventually reached international markets.

The Making of ‘Kheer Mohan

Chauparan’s ‘Kheer Mohan‘ is made from milk chenna, which imparts its unique flavour. The sweet is prepared in two variations: one in sugar syrup and the other in jaggery syrup. It bears resemblance to rasgulla and gulab jamun. The price for ‘Kheer Mohan‘ ranges from Rs 250 to Rs 400 per kilogram, with approximately 30 pieces per kilogram. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of ‘Kheer Mohan‘ shops in the area has surged, reflecting its enduring popularity.

For those passing through Chauparan, a taste of ‘Kheer Mohan‘ offers not just a delightful culinary experience but also a taste of history.
