High pollution levels pose a significant threat to eye health, but you can minimize their impact with proper precautions
With the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi and the NCR region frequently crossing hazardous levels above 500, the risk of eye-related issues rises significantly. Pollutants like PM2.5, PM10, and other toxic substances can irritate the eyes, causing dryness, redness, itching, and in severe cases, infections or allergies. Proper eye care and hygiene are crucial to minimize the impact of pollution on your vision.
Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, Director, Dr Basu Eye Care & Jagat Pharma shares some essential tips to protect your eyes during AQI spikes:
- Wear UV Protection Glasses OutdoorsWhen stepping outside, wear UV protection or wrap-around glasses to shield your eyes from particulate matter and pollutants. These glasses act as a barrier, preventing irritants from coming into direct contact with your eyes. If you wear prescription glasses, consider adding an anti-pollution or UV filter to enhance protection.
- Limit Outdoor Exposure During High Pollution HoursPollution levels are often highest in the early morning and late evening. Avoid going outdoors during these hours unless absolutely necessary. For sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, or those prone to allergies, staying indoors during AQI spikes is critical to prevent eye discomfort or infections.
- Rinse Your Eyes RegularlyAfter coming indoors, gently rinse your eyes with clean, lukewarm water. This helps wash away any pollutants or irritants that may have accumulated on your lashes or in your tear film. Avoid using unclean or untreated water as it could introduce bacteria, worsening irritation.
- Use Artificial Tears or Lubricating Eye DropsPolluted air often causes dry eyes by reducing the moisture in the tear film. Using preservative-free artificial tears can keep your eyes hydrated and alleviate dryness. Consult an ophthalmologist to select the most suitable eye drops for your needs.
- Avoid Touching or Rubbing Your EyesPollutants can easily transfer from your hands to your eyes, increasing the risk of infections like conjunctivitis. Wash your hands frequently and refrain from touching or rubbing your eyes, even if they feel irritated. Instead, use eye drops or a cold compress to soothe the discomfort.
- Wear a Mask That Covers the Nose and MouthWhile masks are primarily used for respiratory protection, they also help minimize the exposure of your eyes to airborne particles by reducing their circulation around your face. Masks with a snug fit around the nose bridge work best.
- Maintain a Clean Indoor EnvironmentIndoor pollutants can also irritate the eyes. Use an air purifier equipped with HEPA filters to reduce particulate matter indoors. Regularly clean curtains, carpets, and furniture to eliminate dust that could worsen eye allergies.
- Reduce Screen Time to Prevent Eye StrainWith more time spent indoors during AQI spikes, increased screen time can lead to digital eye strain. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps relax your eye muscles and prevents additional strain on your vision.
- Incorporate Eye-Friendly Foods in Your DietA healthy diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, and E can strengthen eye health. Include foods like carrots, spinach, nuts, and fatty fish in your meals to combat the oxidative stress caused by pollution.
- Seek Medical Advice if Symptoms PersistIf you experience persistent eye irritation, redness, or blurred vision despite taking precautions, consult an eye specialist promptly. Early treatment can prevent minor discomfort from escalating into serious conditions like corneal infections or chronic dry eye syndrome.High pollution levels pose a significant threat to eye health, but you can minimize their impact with proper precautions. Simple steps like wearing protective glasses, using lubricating eye drops, and maintaining cleanliness go a long way in preventing eye infections and discomfort. During prolonged AQI spikes, a combination of personal hygiene, protective measures, and professional guidance can help you keep your eyes healthy and resilient. Protecting your eyes today ensures better vision for tomorrow.
