Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on December 16 to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war which also resulted in the liberation of Bangladesh. The day represents a high point in Indian history. On this day, the country salutes the bravery and sacrifice of the armed forces.
Vijay Diwas History
The 1971 war between India and Pakistan started on December 3 and lasted 13 days. The reason for the outbreak of this war was the humanitarian crisis in East Pakistan, where the Pakistani army launched a campaign against the civilian population. India intervened to support the people in their struggle for independence.
On December 16, 1971, Pakistani General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, the commander of the Pakistani forces, formally surrendered to the combined forces of India and Bangladesh’s Mukti Bahini. Approximately 93,000 Pakistani troops surrendered, which was the largest military capitulation since World War II.

The victory gave birth not only to Bangladesh but also established India as a regional power. The casualties included an estimated death of about 3,900 Indian soldiers and hundreds sustained injuries.
