Jim Carrey has revealed why he returned as the villainous Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
“You know, I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius. Which is a bit of a stretch,” he told the Associated Press.
He added: “And, you know, it’s just I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly.”
After the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022, Carrey said he’d return to acting if he came across a script “written in gold ink by angels” and said he was “serious” about quitting the profession or at least taking a break.
He said: “I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
In the third installment of the video game inspired movies, the Ace Ventura star plays Dr. Ivo Robotnik, as well as the character’s grandfather, which meant twice the workload.
However, the Dumb and Dumber star was dedicated to the film, according to director Jeff Fowler.
“I don’t know what we would’ve done,” Fowler told Entertainment Weekly of Jim Carrey’s performance in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. “I don’t even want to think about this.”
