Martin Freeman reacts to ‘Miller’s Girl’ backlash

Martin Freeman has finally broken silence on the steamy scene he did with Jenna Ortega in Miller’s Girl.

His statement comes after the movie faced backlash for an X-rated scene involving the Sherlock star and Jenna, who share an age gap of 31 years.

In Miller’s Girl, the Wednesday actress plays the role of an 18-year-old student named Cairo Sweet while Martin takes on the role of her teacher Jonathan Miller.

Defending the plot, Martin told The Times that it was meant to be “grown-up and nuanced.”

“It’s not saying, ‘Isn’t [an age-gap romance] great.’ Stories about difficult subjects can be tainted by association,” he told the publication.

Martin further defended the racy sequence by giving an example of Steven Spielberg’s 1992 film Schindler’s List.

“And that’s a shame. Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?” he said.

Previously, intimacy coordinator Kristina Arjona also dismissed any speculations of Jenna being “uncomfortable” and assured that she was equally involved in the decisions made for the racy scene.

“There were many, many people throughout this process, engaging with [Jenna] to make sure that it was consistent with what she was comfortable with, and she was very determined and very sure of what she wanted to do,” Kristina told Daily Mail in February.
