Disha Madan returned to the French Riviera for the second consecutive year to attend the 79th Cannes Film Festival, once again using fashion as a powerful medium to spotlight Indian craftsmanship on a global stage. Walking the Brut x Nespresso Cannes red carpet, the actor embraced a look that beautifully blended South Indian heritage with contemporary couture.

For the occasion, Disha wore a custom creation by Bengaluru-based designer label Niharika Vivek. The ensemble stood out not only for its striking silhouette but also for the story woven into every detail. Crafted using two vintage handwoven silk sarees, the outfit celebrated the richness of heirloom Indian textiles while reimagining them through a modern couture lens.

The original sarees featured intricate multicoloured weave patterns and traditional metallic gold zari borders, which were thoughtfully transformed into a sculptural mermaid-style gown. The silhouette featured a structured corset bodice, a plunging halter neckline, a cinched waist accentuated with dramatic peplum-inspired hip detailing, and a floor-grazing skirt that added movement and elegance to the look.

Drawing inspiration from South Indian temple architecture and ancient stone carvings symbolising feminine strength, the couture piece carefully balanced fluidity with structure while preserving the identity and craftsmanship of the original textiles. Sustainability remained central to the concept, with the dress serving as a statement on conscious couture and textile revival.

The craftsmanship behind the ensemble was equally remarkable. The look incorporated involved over 2,500 hours of hand embroidery and finishing by women artisans. Alongside couture detailing, the process also included extensive restoration work on the vintage sarees, making the outfit a true blend of heritage preservation and contemporary design.

Disha complemented the couture ensemble with regal beauty styling and traditional Indian jewellery. Her hair was styled into a long, textured braid cascading elegantly down her back, adorned with vintage-inspired South Indian hair ornaments reminiscent of traditional choti jewellery. Gold-toned embellishments studded with red and green stones were delicately woven through the braid, adding depth and cultural richness to the overall appearance.

Her jewellery further elevated the regal aesthetic. The actor wore a statement gold necklace featuring an intricately crafted pendant adorned with traditional gemstones, perfectly complementing the plunging neckline of the gown. Heavy chandelier earrings, ornate ear cuffs, multiple statement rings, and a delicate nose ring completed the look with understated grandeur.

Speaking about the ensemble, Disha Madan shared, “For me, Cannes has never just been about fashion; it’s about representation. Wearing something so deeply rooted in South Indian craftsmanship and heritage felt incredibly special. I love that we could take vintage sarees with so much history and reinterpret them in a way that still feels global, modern, and powerful.”

At a festival where fashion often leans towards international luxury labels and high-glamour trends, Disha Madan’s Cannes appearance stood out for its storytelling, sustainability, and celebration of Indian textile heritage.
