In a move aimed at making dream weddings more accessible, the Tamil Nadu government has introduced a new initiative that will allow middle and lower-income families to host weddings by the sea, an experience that was until now largely reserved for celebrities and affluent business families. The scheme will be implemented along the eastern coastline of Chennai, particularly in the scenic Mamallapuram stretch. The initiative seeks to provide an affordable alternative to expensive private beach resorts, enabling ordinary families to celebrate weddings amid natural coastal surroundings without incurring heavy costs. Under the programme, the booking fee for the venue is around Rs 10,000. Catering charges are fixed at Rs 700 per person for vegetarian meals and Rs 1,100 per person for non-vegetarian meals. Families will also be allowed to stay at the venue for up to 22 hours for approximately Rs 5,000. However, arrangements such as the wedding stage, decorations and lighting will have to be organised by the families themselves. (News18 Tamil)
Alongside the wedding initiative, authorities are also planning to strengthen Blue Flag standards, an international eco-label for clean and safe beaches, at Kovalam, Marina, Nagapattinam and Ramanathapuram beaches. (News18 Tamil)
Officials say the move is part of a broader effort to promote safe, organised and aesthetically appealing beach weddings in India, while making the experience accessible to the middle class. Bookings and further details about the scheme are available on the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation website at www.ttdconline.com. (News18 Tamil)
