Dr Shishir Joshi, physician and intensivist at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Deccan Gymkhana, shares, “It is a natural protein produced in our body that keeps the skin firm and supports joints, bones, and muscles. And as we grow older, the body naturally makes less collagen, which can lead to wrinkles, joint stiffness, and slower healing.” This is the core reason why collagen supplements are often promoted as a way to make up for this loss.

Collagen supplements can help in some cases. They supply amino acids that help the body repair tissues. Some people with mild joint discomfort may feel better when they consume collagen regularly, along with exercise. There is also some evidence that collagen, when paired with vitamin C, may improve skin hydration and elasticity over time. For individuals who do not consume enough protein, collagen supplements can add a small nutritional boost.

However, it’s not recommended to expect dramatic results. Dr Shishir says, “When people consume collagen, it is broken down in the stomach just like any other protein. The body uses these nutrients where they are needed the most, which means collagen doesn’t go directly to the skin or joints, and the results can differ from person to person.”

Collagen is also not a complete protein. So, do not skip proper meals and depend on these supplements too much, as it can lead to a lack of nutrients. Also, it is important to keep in mind that the quality of supplements is not always the same, and some may contain added sugar or artificial ingredients that can cause stomach discomfort. People with kidney or liver problems, or those taking regular medicines, should be careful and talk to a doctor before using collagen supplements. Too much protein can put extra pressure on the body, especially for those who are dealing with health conditions.

Dr Shishir says, “If the goal is healthy skin and joints, those can be obtained mainly from daily habits. Eating a well-balanced diet, drinking enough water, staying active, protecting your skin from the sun, and getting enough sleep matter far more than any supplement.”

Collagen is not a miracle cure, but it is not completely useless either. If it is used sensibly, it may help a little, but one also needs to understand that there are no quick fixes for health; consistently making healthy choices matters the most.
