But what does it mean when, despite proper care, the plant suddenly starts drying up or shedding leaves? According to astrology and Vastu Shastra, this may not be just a plant issue—it could signal deeper imbalances in the home.
Why Is A Drying Tulsi Seen As A Bad Sign?
Tulsi is associated with the planet Mercury (Budh). If the plant begins to dry suddenly, it may indicate a weak or afflicted Mercury. Since Mercury governs intelligence, communication, business, and education, its imbalance can reflect in various life challenges.
Astrology also links a drying Tulsi plant to Vastu dosh or Pitru dosh, which are believed to bring financial troubles, health issues, or family conflicts.

Ideally, Tulsi should be placed in the north-east direction or near the main entrance, in a clean and sacred space.
If a newly planted Tulsi starts shedding leaves within days, it is also seen as inauspicious. This could indicate negative energy or planetary imbalance. In such cases, replacing the plant and addressing underlying issues is advised.
Simple Remedies To Protect Your Tulsi
To prevent Tulsi from drying and to maintain positive energy at home:
- Water the plant daily, preferably with a few drops of Ganga jal, and light a ghee diya near it morning and evening.
- Place Tulsi in the north-east direction and avoid keeping it on the roof or in the south.
- Perform rituals for ancestors on Amavasya, such as offering prayers and food.
- Chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya” near the plant regularly.
- Recite Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays and offer chana dal to the plant.
Always keep the Tulsi plant in a clean space and wash your hands before touching it. Avoid cutting or plucking it unnecessarily. If the plant dries completely, remove it respectfully and plant a new one. Regular care, along with traditional practices, helps keep the plant healthy and the home positive.
