Anyone who’s tried typing on a phone with nails that are long knows how difficult it can be. From sloping finger angles to frequent typing errors, manicures and touchscreens haven’t ever been the best of friends. It doesn’t matter whether it’s manicures with acrylic nails as gel extensions, just naturally long nails; the majority of users will end up performing finger-tip exercises to type a message or to scroll through their social media.Scientists may now find a solution right out of the future. Researchers from the American Chemical Society recently presented an exciting idea that can revolutionise the way that people using long nails communicate with touchscreens. The idea behind it is quite easy: make a clear nail polish that makes the fingernails act like a stylus.The study was performed by researchers at Centenary College of Louisiana, where chemistry undergraduate Manasi Desai collaborated with Chemistry professor Joshua Lawrence to develop the idea. In the research, which was published at the ACS Spring 2026 conference, the group experimented with conductive substances that might assist in interacting with the smartphones of today.Why touchscreens ignore fingernailsThe latest smartphones employ what is called capacitive touchscreens. They operate by using small electric fields that are spread throughout the screen. The human skin is a natural conductor of electricity; therefore, when a finger touches the screen, it disrupts the field, and the phone immediately detects the signal.Fingernails are, however, not electrically conductive. They can’t register swipes or taps on screens. Nails with long lengths typically have to use the side of their fingers or bend their fingers awkwardly for proper operation of devices.Researchers at Centenary College wanted to solve this common annoyance without forcing customers to change the manicure they prefer. Their approach was to add conductivity compounds to clear polishes and make the polish clear enough to apply over every manicure.

The science behind the “Smart” nail PolishThe researchers tested more than 50 additives as well as a variety of transparent nail polish formulations prior to finding promising results using chemicals like taurine or alcoholamine. Taurine is widely regarded as a food supplement as well as an organic chemical used in various industrial processes.In contrast to earlier experiments that depended on carbon nanotubes and metallic particles, this new technique makes use of acid-base chemistry in order to transfer electric charge. The polish, as it is described by researchers, allows tiny charged particles, referred to as protons, to travel across molecules, generating just enough conductivity to recognise a tap on a nail.Based on the research titled Scientists create clear nail polish that lets you use touchscreens with long nails, the Polish prototype was able to activate smartphone screens in tests.Not ready for your next manicure yetAlthough the concept is exciting, the technology is just beginning to be tested. The researchers admit that the formulation isn’t yet reliable enough to be used in commercial applications. Many tests showed that the polish was only effective for a couple of hours due to the fact that certain components evaporated rapidly after applying.There are concerns regarding longevity and toxicity. Although taurine is generally secure, ethanolamine might not be suitable for daily usage in cosmetics. Researchers are currently looking for more sustainable and safe alternatives which can keep conductivity intact and not affect nail polish’s quality.Despite this, the innovation is already attracting attention due to how relatable the matter is. The use of touchscreens is becoming a regular and integral part of our lives, including tablets and smartphones, as well as refrigerators, laptops, and even smart home control systems and finding innovative ways to allow people to interact using technology comfortably is more important.At present, manicures that are touchscreen-friendly remain an experiment in the lab rather than an item sold at a salon. If researchers are successful in perfecting their formulation, future manicures will offer more than just making you look fashionable. It is possible that they can make long nails work with smartphones without a lot of frustration.
