“Ambition is valuable,” he adds, “but without rest, it eventually leads to exhaustion and decreased efficiency.”

“‘Me time’ is not about doing nothing, it’s about intentional pauses that allow the mind and body to recover,” says Dr Paul.

This can include simple activities like reading, walking, journaling, or even sitting in silence without distractions.

Studies in mental health suggest that individuals who take regular breaks experience better emotional regulation, increased creativity, and improved decision-making.

“When you step away from work, you actually return with greater clarity and efficiency,” he notes.

The Health Impact of Imbalance

When rest is neglected, the consequences extend beyond mental fatigue. “Lack of downtime can disrupt sleep patterns, weaken immunity, and increase the risk of conditions like hypertension,” warns Dr Sujit Paul.

On the other hand, too much unstructured time without purpose can also affect focus and motivation.

“The goal is not to choose between work and rest, but to create a sustainable balance between the two,” he explains.

Practical Ways to Create Balance

“Balance is not about drastic changes, it’s about building small, consistent habits,” says Dr. Sujit Paul.

Here are some practical ways to achieve that balance:

Set realistic goals: Break tasks into manageable steps instead of overwhelming yourself with long to-do lists.

Schedule downtime: Treat rest as a non-negotiable part of your day, just like work or study.

Limit digital overload: Allocate specific times to check emails and social media.

Listen to your body: Fatigue, irritability, or lack of focus are signals that you need a pause.

Practice mindful activities: Even 10–15 minutes of deep breathing or quiet reflection can help reset your energy.

“A well-rested mind performs better, thinks clearly, and adapts faster,” says Dr. Sujit Paul. “True productivity comes from balance, not burnout.”
