Summer heat and no ice in the freezer? Don’t panic. If you’re short on time and need ice cubes quickly for chilled drinks, these simple tricks can help speed up the freezing process.

Why Does Ice Take So Long? Under normal conditions, water can take 3–4 hours to freeze into solid ice cubes. But with a few smart tweaks, you can significantly reduce the waiting time and have ice ready much sooner.

Hack 1 — Use Lukewarm Water: Instead of filling your ice tray with cold tap water, try using slightly warm water. Scientists call this the Mpemba Effect—a phenomenon where warmer water can sometimes freeze faster than colder water under certain conditions. Warm water evaporates more quickly and may cool down faster, helping ice form sooner.

How to Use the Warm Water Trick: Fill your ice tray with lukewarm water and place it in the freezer. Quick Tip: Don’t fill the tray to the brim. Leave a little space for expansion as the water freezes. This simple swap may help you get ice cubes in around an hour.

Hack 2 — Wrap the Tray in Aluminum Foil: Using a plastic ice tray? Wrap aluminium foil around the outside of the tray after filling it with water. Aluminium conducts cold temperatures efficiently, helping transfer the freezer’s chill to the water more quickly.

Why Aluminum Foil Works: Foil acts as a temperature conductor, allowing the cold air inside the freezer to reach the water faster. The result? Quicker cooling and faster ice formation without any extra effort.

Switch to a Metal Tray: If speed is your priority, skip plastic or silicone trays and use aluminium or stainless-steel containers instead. Metal is an excellent conductor of heat, helping water freeze more quickly than plastic.

No Metal Ice Tray? No Problem: You don’t necessarily need a dedicated metal ice tray. Small steel bowls, aluminium containers, or metal cups can also help speed up the freezing process when you’re in a hurry. (All images: Canva)
