Summer can harm your eyes with dryness, allergies, UV exposure, and infections. An expert shares simple tips to protect your eye health during the hot months.

Vision loss: Simple precautions can go a long way in protecting your vision during the hotter months
Summer brings longer days, outdoor activities, and holidays for students but it can also take a toll on your eyes. Common seasonal issues include dryness, allergies, UV damage, and infections, especially those related to swimming. Being aware of these risks and taking simple precautions can help maintain good eye health.
“Summer conditions like heat, dust, and increased outdoor exposure can significantly impact eye health if proper care is not taken,” says Dr Pooja Prabhu, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Padmanabhanagar.
Dry Eyes in Summer
Dry eyes are common during summer due to heat, dehydration, and increased use of air conditioners and fans. Symptoms often include irritation, burning, and a gritty sensation.
“Staying well-hydrated and using lubricating eye drops can provide relief,” advises Dr Prabhu. “It’s also important to avoid sitting directly in the airflow of air conditioners or fans.”
Allergies and Conjunctivitis
Allergic conjunctivitis is another frequent concern, especially with increased exposure to pollen and dust. It typically presents with itching, redness, and watering.
“Avoid rubbing your eyes, wash your face frequently, and use doctor-prescribed anti-allergic drops when necessary,” says Dr Prabhu.
UV Protection Is Essential
Exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can damage the eyes over time, contributing to conditions such as cataracts and photokeratitis.
“Wearing oversized sunglasses with proper UV protection, along with wide-brimmed hats, can significantly reduce the risk of UV-related eye damage,” she explains.
Swimming-Related Eye Infections
Eye infections tend to rise during summer, particularly due to swimming in poorly maintained pools. Chlorine can irritate the eyes, while contaminated water may lead to infections such as conjunctivitis or keratitis.
“Always wear well-fitted swimming goggles and avoid opening your eyes underwater,” advises Dr Prabhu.
Hygiene and Contact Lens Care
Maintaining proper hygiene is crucial to prevent infections. “Avoid sharing towels or eye cosmetics, as this can spread infections,” says Dr Prabhu. “Contact lens users should be especially cautious, avoid wearing lenses while swimming, showering, or sleeping, and maintain strict hygiene practices.”
When to See a Doctor
If you experience persistent redness, pain, discharge, or blurred vision, it is important to seek medical attention promptly.
“Early consultation with an ophthalmologist can prevent complications and ensure timely treatment,” she adds.
With a few mindful habits, you can enjoy the summer season while keeping your eyes safe and healthy.
“Simple precautions can go a long way in protecting your vision during the hotter months,” concludes Dr Prabhu.
