The sticker on the fruit don’t just tell its price it also reveals whether your fruit is organic, chemically grown, or genetically modified.
Ever noticed small coloured stickers on apples, bananas, or oranges? These aren’t just for branding—they carry important information about how your fruit was grown.

What Is a PLU Code? The numbers on these stickers are called PLU (Price Look-Up) codes. They don’t just tell the price—they reveal whether your fruit is organic, chemically grown, or genetically modified.

4-Digit Code (Starts with 3 or 4): If the code has 4 digits, it means the fruit is grown conventionally. Pesticides and chemical fertilisers are used—so wash thoroughly before eating.

A 5-digit code starting with 8 indicates the fruit is genetically modified (GMO). These are altered in labs for size or shelf life and are not considered natural.

A 5-digit code starting with 9 means the fruit is organic. No harmful chemicals or pesticides—making it the safest and healthiest choice.

Are These Stickers Safe? According to the US Food and Drug Administration, the stickers and glue used are food-grade and non-toxic. Still, it’s best to remove the sticker and wash the fruit before eating.

Smart Buying Tips: Always check the sticker before buying. Prefer fruits with codes starting with 9. If there’s no sticker, don’t assume it’s organic—wash all fruits properly with salt or warm water.
