Goa has long been a go-to destination for travellers, but recent price hikes in taxis and hotels, along with overtourism, have made it less appealing. Data shared on social media shows how tourism in Goa surged between 2018 and 2019, but took a sharp dip in 2023. Travellers are looking for more private places away from the crowds. One such place gaining popularity as a peaceful alternative is Sindhudurg. The region is easily accessible by road, passing through towns like Kankavli, Kudal and Sawantwadi or via the scenic Konkan Railway. It’s becoming a top choice for those looking to enjoy nature and escape the tourist spots.

Deepak Kesarkar, Education and Marathi Language Minister, said in an earlier interview with Deccan Chronicle, “Sindhudurg has everything except snow-capped mountains and desert. Anyone who visits this place comes back again with more time in hand. Whether it is adventure tourism like trekking, mountaineering, rock-climbing, valley crossing or scuba diving, we have it all covered in Sindhudurg.”

If you’re planning a trip to the hidden gem of Maharashtra, Sindhudurg, here are a few places you should include in your itinerary:

  1. Sindhudurg Fort: This architectural marvel, built between 1664 and 1667 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is surrounded by water and rocks, which made it difficult for enemies to enter secretly. Other than the stunning design, the fort also offers stunning coastal views and is only accessible by boat, making it a unique landmark.
  2. Tsunami Island: It is a haven for adventure and beach lovers. Its unspoiled and shiny beaches offer a variety of water sports, like parasailing, jet skiing and banana boat rides. Whether you’re looking for adventurous activities or just some peaceful time near the sea, this island won’t disappoint.
  3. Sawantwadi Palace: Built between 1755 and 1803 by Khem Savant Bhosale, the palace will transport visitors back to the era of the Maratha rulers. Known for its traditional architecture, it also has a fascinating glimpse of the area’s royal history.
  4. Amboli: It’s a picturesque hill station, known for its blooming forests, waterfalls and breathtaking viewpoints. Amboli is a peaceful spot, especially during the monsoon, which makes it paradise for nature lovers and adventurers. The origin of the Hiranyakeshi River and Kavalashesh Point are the two major attractions.
  5. Malvan Marine Sanctuary: Scuba diving enthusiasts get a golden chance to explore vibrant coral reefs and rich marine life. Visit the sanctuary for an unforgettable underwater experience.
