Bukayo Saka delivered the defining performance of England’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, scoring a historic hat-trick to inspire the Three Lions to a thrilling 6-4 victory over France in the third-place playoff at Miami Stadium on Saturday. The Arsenal forward became only the fourth England player to score a hat-trick at a FIFA World Cup, joining Geoff Hurst, Gary Lineker and Harry Kane, as Thomas Tuchel’s side secured the bronze medal and their best finish at the tournament since lifting the trophy in 1966.
Saka opened his account in the 37th minute after Marcus Rashford threaded a perfectly weighted pass into his path. Timing his run to perfection, the winger struck a clinical left-footed finish beyond Mike Maignan to extend England’s lead to 3-0. He doubled his tally in first-half stoppage time, collecting Eberechi Eze’s incisive pass before cutting inside onto his stronger foot and drilling another composed finish into the corner to send England into the interval with a commanding 4-0 advantage.

France mounted a remarkable response after the break as Kylian Mbappe scored twice and Bradley Barcola added another to cut England’s lead to 4-3. But with the momentum swinging towards Les Bleus, Saka produced the decisive moment of the contest. After Djed Spence was brought down inside the penalty area in the 87th minute, the 24-year-old confidently dispatched the spot-kick to complete his hat-trick, restore England’s two-goal cushion and all but seal the bronze medal before Jude Bellingham added a sixth in stoppage time.
The treble elevated Saka into an exclusive group of England greats, making him just the fourth Three Lions player to score a World Cup hat-trick after Hurst in the 1966 final against West Germany, Gary Lineker against Poland in 1986 and Harry Kane against Panama in 2018. It also took his senior international tally to 17 goals, further underlining his growing importance to England as they look ahead to hosting Euro 2028.
