Hacks has successfully hacked into the hearts of viewers, scoring a major win at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards.
On Sunday, September 15, co-creator Paul W. Downs stepped on the stage along with the Hacks family to receive the Outstanding Comedy Series award at the 76th annual Primetime Emmys.
“I have no thoughts in my brain. Thank you so much to the academy, let’s brace ourselves, I might get emotional,” the co-creator began his acceptance speech. “We are so lucky to live our dream and make television and we couldn’t do it without our Hacks family.”
Downs expressed his gratitude to the writers, cast, and crew before sharing his disbelief at the win.
“When we pitched this show about two women, one of whom was over 60, we didn’t know if we would sell it,” he continued, “About 20% of our population is over 60, and only 3% of those characters [are] on television.”
While Downs “wants to be a good, old lead” and help the coming creatives, Writer and director Lucia Aniello urged viewers to “support comedy. It speaks truth to power. It really does, so support your local comedian.”
She concluded by adding, “We have to go because we start shooting the next season in five days.”
Notably, The Bear bagged 23 nods, the most ever for a comedy series, and took home awards for best lead actor, best supporting actor and actress, and best comedy series. But it was HBO’s Hacks that won for best comedy series.
