‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ tops box office amid James Cameron remarks on franchise’s future

Avatar: Fire and Ash is dominating the box office with the full Na’vi force, as its director, James Cameron, shares what he will do if the movie doesn’t do enough business.

Not only has it had a smaller drop than its predecessor, The Way of Water, in its second week, but it has also raked in $64 million, shooting its domestic tally to $217 million.

With the addition of $181 million in the overseas market, Avatar: Fire and Ash has grossed $760 million. Despite these strong numbers, the latest film still has to perform more.

This is because director James previously said the franchise’s future depended on Fire and Ash being a mega-hit.

If the worst-case scenario occurs and the film does not become a financial success on the scale of a billion-dollar series, the filmmaker said he will share the stories of Avatar 4 and 5 in a press conference.

“I don’t know if the saga goes beyond this point. I hope it does. But, you know, we prove that business case every time we go out… If we don’t get to make 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference, and I’ll tell you what we were gonna do. How’s that?” James earlier told EW.

Besides this abrupt option, there is another one, said the director: novelize the scripts of the fourth and fifth installments. “There’s so much culture and backstory and lateral detail in these characters that’s been worked out. I’d love to do something that’s at that level of granular detail.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is playing in theatres.
