Ezra Miller just made an unexpected return to the red carpet, and yes, everyone’s talking about it. The 32-year-old actor popped up at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 17, marking their first public red carpet appearance since The Flash premiere in Los Angeles back in June 2023.
Surprise level? High. Fashion level? Burgundy tux and a beret kind of high.
Miller wasn’t there to promote a new project of their own but instead showed up in support of director Lynne Ramsay for the premiere of her film Die My Love, according to Variety.
The two go way back to 2011’s We Need to Talk About Kevin — which, let’s be honest, feels like both a movie and a phrase that’s been haunting headlines ever since.
They walked past photographers without stopping, but the moment didn’t go unnoticed — a video of the sighting quickly hit X (formerly Twitter) and had fans doing a double take.
This marked a rare public moment for Miller, who’s been keeping a low profile following several high-profile controversies over the past few years.
From a 2020 incident in Iceland — where a video surfaced appearing to show them choking a woman — to multiple arrests in 2022, including a couple in Hawaii, the Perks of Being a Wallflower actor had quite the turbulent streak.
There was also that felony burglary charge in Vermont in August 2022, after Miller was accused of stealing bottles of alcohol. They pleaded not guilty and avoided jail time in each case.
In August 2022, Miller opened up in a statement to E! News, offering an apology and acknowledging their struggles. “Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment,” they said. “I want to apologize to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior.”
They continued, “I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.”
Then came June 2023, when a temporary harassment order against Miller expired. They addressed the situation with a personal statement posted to Instagram, pushing back on the claims.
“I’m encouraged by today’s outcome and very grateful at this moment to everyone who has stood beside me and sought to ensure that this egregious misuse of the protection order was halted,” they said. “I have been unjustly and directly targeted.”
Miller also gave an update on how they were doing. “I want everyone to know,” they wrote, “that I am continuing to do my best to preserve my own wellness and what I can to reverse the collateral damage this ordeal has brought upon me and those close to me.”
Now, with this red carpet return — low-key as it was — it seems Ezra Miller is cautiously stepping back into the public eye. No word yet on what’s next, but if Cannes was the warm-up, it’ll be interesting to see if Hollywood’s ready for their comeback.
