Jon M. Chu recently revealed that they brought the fan-favorite musical Wicked to the big screen because of a ‘master plan.
While conversing with PEOPLE magazine in a behind-the-scenes video of the team assembling the hit films based on Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s long-running Broadway show, the 46-year-old American filmmaker opened up about making Wicked part one and two.
In a clip that shows glimpses of top-tier stars such as Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and others, Chu said, “From the beginning, there was always a master plan of this story. The fact that people responded to the first movie and fell in love with these characters means the world to all of us.”
He went on to add that the sequel “is where it all comes together, where it all smashes into a bigger thing.”
“Deep down, we knew that this was always going to be a bigger story,” especially Wicked: For Good, which is “a reveal of the power of when we all can come together and tell a story,” the Crazy Rich Asians director stated.
“And in my opinion, that’s the whole reason that you made Wicked in the first place,” Chu quipped.
Before concluding, it is pertinent to mention that Wicked: For Good will hit PVOD on digital platforms on December 30, 2025 in what is a 43-day exclusive theatrical window, concluding the story of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s witches of Oz.
