Miley Cyrus is diving into bold new territory as she works on her next album.
In her Harper’s Bazaar cover story published Nov. 20, the pop star revealed that her ninth studio album, tentatively titled Something Beautiful, will be a concept album that draws heavy inspiration from Pink Floyd’s The Wall and Nicolas Cage’s cult film Mandy.
“My idea was making The Wall, but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous, filled with pop culture,” Cyrus, 31, explained, adding that visual elements are key to the project. “Every song has these healing sound properties. Whether they’re about destruction, heartbreak, or death, they’re presented beautifully because even the nastiest times of our life have a point of beauty,” she shared.
For the visual component, Cyrus also took cues from Mandy, a revenge-fueled love story. “I wanted to adapt the film into a musical and play Nicolas Cage,” she revealed, adding, “Romance and revenge — those are some of the greatest tragedies.”
Fans have eagerly awaited new music since Endless Summer Vacation (2023) with memorable hits like Flowers, which earned her her first two Grammys.
For her new project, Cyrus is collaborating with director Panos Cosmatos and her boyfriend, Liily guitarist Maxx Morando.
