Sister Act 3 is moving forward without Dame Maggie Smith.

Whoopi Goldberg recently shared some bittersweet updates on Sister Act 3, revealing that the film’s production had to pivot following the passing of her beloved late co-star.

In a recent conversation with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Goldberg explained how Smith’s death in September meant reimagining aspects of the long-anticipated Disney sequel.

“We’re having to make some readjustments, because we just lost Maggie Smith,” Goldberg said, hinting that Smith might have reprised her role as Reverend Mother in the new film. “We will get it done. We’ll get it done. It’s a shift.”

Goldberg has been vocal about Sister Act 3 over the years, actively lobbying for the return of original cast members and working with producer Tyler Perry to bring the project to life. The first two films, which hit screens in 1992 and 1993, became instant classics, grossing nearly $357 million worldwide. They followed Goldberg’s character Deloris, a lounge singer hiding out in a convent, and in the sequel, inspiring a choir of students.

Beyond the story adjustments, Goldberg even extended a playful invitation to Pope Francis for a cameo during a Vatican visit last year. With her enthusiasm and a dedicated team, she promises the beloved Sister Act magic will live on, despite the loss of her friend.
