Labour Day parade 2026: Everything to know about route, closures, start times
The annual West Indian American Day Parade and J’Ouvert festivities kick off Monday, September 7, drawing hundreds of thousands to Crown Heights for one of New York City’s largest celebrations of Caribbean culture.
The parade is commonly referred to as the Labour Day Parade, as it is always held on Labour Day.
Start timings
J’Ouvert marks the start of celebrations on Monday morning from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., although the viewing begins at 2 a.m. The major West Indian American Day Parade starts at 11 a.m. from Eastern Parkway and Rochester Avenue. This year, the parade will end at 5:30 p.m. sharp, “in light of the violence that has occurred on and around the parade route in the past,” according to organizers.
Parade Route
Eastern Parkway starts the parade journey from Rochester Avenue to Grand Army Plaza. J’Ouvert follows the path along Empire Boulevard and Nostrand Avenue from Flatbush Avenue to Rutland Road.
Street Closures
Street closures for J’Ouvert will commence from 11:30 p.m. on Sunday until 11 a.m. on Monday, and these will cover Flatbush Avenue between Grand Army Plaza and Empire Boulevard; Empire Boulevard between Flatbush Avenue and Nostrand Avenue; and Nostrand Avenue from Empire Boulevard to Rutland Road.
Other additional closures during the procession will start at 6 a.m. Monday, growing around 10:30 a.m., and will close Eastern Parkway from Utica Avenue to Grand Army Plaza. The full closure will also include Grand Army Plaza, as well as Washington, Bedford, Rochester, Buffalo, Ralph, Ocean, Lincoln and Rockaway Parkways, among others. NYC officials advise people to make use of public transportation if they plan to travel in the vicinity.
Security
As stated by Mayor Zohran Mamdani during Friday’s briefing, there are no “known specific or credible threats” to any of the planned celebrations; however, thousands of NYPD officers will be patrolling the streets and the subway as part of one of the largest law enforcement operations in a year. Helicopters and drones will be monitoring the festivities overhead.
13 entry points are set along the route for spectators who will be thoroughly screened by NYPD personnel with magnetometers. Prohibited items include drones, alcohol, weapons, large bags, backpacks, blankets, bicycles, scooters, and large banners or flags that can obstruct views.
