US President Donald Trump has shared a post on his Truth Social platform proposing to rename New Mexico as ‘New America’ on September 6, 2026.
Trump’s post on Truth Social highlights a map of the southwestern state with the word “Mexico” crossed out and “America” inserted below.
However, President Trump didn’t provide details as to why he made the post.
Without any further explanation, the post was also shared by the White House official X (formerly Twitter) account.
For context, the post was made less than two weeks after President Trump ordered the renaming of Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid the heightened trade war with Canada.
Soon after the post shared on social media, it even prompted Google updating its map application.
The company stated that the changes were made after the U.S. government’s Geographic Names Information System officially updated the lake’s name.
American technology conglomerate Alphabet’s subsidiary Google released a statement that reads, “People using Maps in the US will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the US and Canada will see both names.”
At the time, within hours after President Trump signed executive order, the Canadian PM, Mark Carney, clapped back and said, “Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario—then, now and always.”
In January 2025, when President Trump ordered the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America,” both Google and Apple followed the suit, updating their map apps to reflect the change for U.S. users.
