Night shifts are silently destroying your health, even if you’re young and fit, study warns

Many people believe that working night shifts only affects your sleep schedule. But a new study from Hyderabad shows that’s not true. Night shift workers are facing serious health problems compared to those who work during the day.The study looked at 45 night shift workers and 45 day shift workers from an IT company. It checked their blood sugar, hormones, and cholesterol levels.

Shocking Results

1. 77% of night shift workers had insulin resistance, a condition that can lead to Type 2 diabetes.

2. Only 62% of day shift workers had the same issue.

What’s surprising is that the night shift workers were younger (average age 28) and had lower body weight than the day shift workers. Still, their health markers were much worse. The study was conducted by doctors from Gandhi Medical College (GMC), Secunderabad, and published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism.

What Doctors Found

According to Dr Vijay Shekar Reddy, head of the Endocrinology Department at Gandhi Hospital, night shift workers showed poor metabolic health even though they looked fitter on the outside. They had:

1. Higher triglyceride (bad fat) levels

2. Lower good cholesterol (HDL)

3. Lower testosterone levels in men

4. Higher estrogen levels in women

5. Vitamin D deficiency

Why This Happens

Doctors say the main reason is the disruption of the body’s natural clock (called circadian rhythm). This internal clock controls sleep, hormones, and metabolism. Dr Mujeeb MA, a consultant endocrinologist, explained: “Melatonin is not just a sleep hormone. It also helps repair the body at night. When you work at night and sleep during the day, melatonin levels drop. This affects energy production in the body and disturbs many hormones.”

The study also found that night shift workers had:

1. Lower growth hormone levels

2. Higher chance of mild thyroid problems (22% vs 11% in day workers)

Important Warning: Doctors say that just checking weight or waist size is not enough. Many night shift workers look slim and young, but inside, their health is suffering. Low testosterone can also increase the risk of erectile dysfunction in men.The researchers highlighted that India needs more studies on this topic. They advised companies and doctors to pay attention not just to weight, but also to sleep patterns and hormonal health. Night shifts are very common in IT, healthcare, manufacturing, and transport. If you work at night, it’s important to get regular health check-ups that go beyond just weight and sugar levels.
