Diwali was celebrated with great pomp across the country on October 31, and now people are gearing up for Chhath Mahaparv. While Chhath Puja is celebrated nationwide, it holds special significance in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. As this four-day festival approaches, many are curious about the dates for Chhath Puja.

Astrologer and Vastu expert Rakesh Chaturvedi explains that the Chhath festival takes place from Chaturthi to Saptami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month.

The Mahaparv begins with the ritual of Nahai-Khai, followed by Kharna on the second day. On the third day, devotees stand in the river and offer Arghya to the Sun during sunset. On the fourth day, they offer Arghya again to the rising sun. The evening Arghya is offered on Shashthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Kartik month, while the morning Arghya is offered on Saptami Tithi, marking the festival’s conclusion. Devotees observe a 36-hour-long waterless fast during this period.

According to mythological beliefs, worshipping Chhathi Maiya blesses devotees with health, happiness, prosperity, and children.

“The Shashthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Kartik month will begin on November 7 at 12:41pm. It will end on November 8 at 12:34 pm. Therefore, the evening Arghya will be offered on November 7, while the morning Arghya will be given on November 8,” says Rakesh Chaturvedi.

Nahai Khay and Kharna Dates

Nahay Khay will be observed on Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Kartik, which falls on November 5, and Kharna on Panchami Tithi, November 6. After a 36-hour-long fast without water, devotees worship Chhathi Maiya in the evening and consume prasad.
