The significance of lighting lamps on Dev Deepawali holds deep spiritual meaning.
Dev Deepawali, also called Dev Diwali, is a renowned festival celebrated each year in the sacred city of Varanasi. This festival honours the triumph of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura. Thus, it is also referred to as Tripurotsav or Tripurari Purnima. The celebration takes place on the auspicious occasion of Kartik Purnima.
This year, Dev Deepawali falls on Friday, November 15. The Purnima tithi begins at 06:19 AM on Nov 15, 2024 and ends at 02:58 AM on Nov 16, 2024. On this sacred day, taking a holy bath in the Ganges at Kashi or Prayagraj is believed to bestow great virtue and spiritual merit. As part of the Dev Deepawali festivities, the ghats along the Ganges in Kashi are beautifully adorned with rows of lamps, which are ceremoniously lit during the Pradosh period, the auspicious time after sunset. Devotees also worship Lord Shiva in the evening, believing their heartfelt wishes and prayers will be granted on this blessed occasion.

Significance of Lighting Diyas:
The significance of lighting lamps on Dev Deepawali holds deep spiritual meaning. When Lord Shiva defeated the demon Tripurasura, liberating gods, sages, and humans from his reign of terror, the gods and goddesses gathered in Kashi on Kartik Purnima to honour this victory. They worshipped Lord Shiva and illuminated the city with countless lamps as a gesture of gratitude and celebration. This tradition continues to this day, as devotees believe that lighting lamps in the evening on Dev Deepawali and offering prayers to Lord Shiva will fulfil their heartfelt desires. It is said that by Shiva’s grace, one is relieved from suffering, illness, sorrow, and various afflictions, allowing for a life blessed with peace and prosperity.
