If you’ve been eyeing those suspiciously cheap flight deals to New York or London with a layover in Paris, there’s some brilliant news. As of 10 April 2026, the dreaded Airport Transit Visa (ATV) for Indian nationals is officially a thing of the past.
But before you pack your bags and plan a quick selfie at the Louvre during your eight-hour layover, there is a major catch you need to know.
The Big Change: What Is The ‘Transit Rule’?
Previously, even if you never stepped foot outside the airport, Indian passport holders needed a visa just to wait in the terminal. Now, thanks to the elevated India-France strategic partnership, that barrier has gone.
The New Reality: You can land at Charles de Gaulle (CDG), hang out in the international zone, shop at luxury boutiques, and board your connecting flight to a non-Schengen country (such as the US, UK, or Canada) without any visa.
The ‘Eiffel Tower’ Trap
Here is where travellers get stuck: The International Zone is not France. If you want to leave the airport terminal to get a hotel room, visit a friend in Paris, or see the sights, you are technically ‘entering’ the Schengen Area.

- Leaving the Airport: Crossing immigration to enter the city (Schengen Short-Stay Visa required).

Is your final destination outside the Schengen Area (e.g. USA, UK)?
- NO: You need a regular Schengen Visa.
- YES: Proceed to Step 2.
Do you plan to stay inside the International Zone of the airport?
- YES: No Visa Required! Enjoy your croissant and board your next flight.
- NO (I want to see Paris/Stay in a city hotel): You MUST apply for a Schengen Short-Stay Visa.
Do you have to change airports (e.g. CDG to Orly)?
- YES: You MUST have a visa, as this requires crossing border control.
Important Checklist For Travellers
According to official guidelines, even without an ATV, you must ensure:
- One Single Booking: Your flights should ideally be under a single PNR (booking reference).
- Luggage: Your bags must be checked through to your final destination. If you have to ‘re-check’ bags, you might have to cross immigration, which requires a visa.
- Stay Duration: Your transit must be within the same day or a reasonable window without leaving the terminal.
