Every year, as the snow melts and the Himalayan trails come alive, thousands of pilgrims and trekkers make their way to Hemkund Sahib, one of the highest gurudwaras in the world. Nestled at an altitude of 4,329 metres in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, this sacred Sikh shrine is surrounded by panoramic views of snow-clad peaks and a glacial lake. And this year, the annual spiritual yatra to the Hemkund Sahib started in May, according to the Hemkunt Sahib Gurudwara Trust, and closes on 10th October.

History Of Hemkund Sahib
Located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand near Joshimath, Hemkund Sahib is situated at a height of over 15,000 feet above sea level. The sacred shrine derived its name from the nearby glacial lake known as Hemkund, which translates to the “Lake of Snow.” This pilgrimage site holds significance for Sikhs as it is dedicated to the tenth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708), and is mentioned in the Dasam Granth. According to folklore, Guru Gobind Singh is believed to have meditated here during his previous life as a hermit. It is also associated with the story of the devoted Sikh, Bhai Gurdas, who discovered the place through his meditation and informed Guru Gobind Singh about it.
When here, you can also visit a small temple dedicated to Lakshman, the brother of Lord Ram, which sits adjacent to the shores of Hemkund Lake.
How To Reach Hemkund Sahib: Trekking Route
Start Point: Most pilgrims begin their journey from Govindghat, which is well-connected to Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun.
From Govindghat, a motorable road leads to Pulna (approx. 4 km).
From Pulna, it’s a 13 km trek to Ghangaria, the base village for both Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers.
From Ghangaria, you’ll trek about 6 km uphill to reach Hemkund Sahib. The steep climb can be challenging but is truly rewarding.
For those who find themselves incapable of trekking, there are convenient options like ponies, palkies, and pitthus.
Best Time To Do Hemkund Yatra
The best time to undertake the Hemkund Sahib Yatra is between June and September, when the weather is relatively pleasant, and the trails are open and safe for trekking. You can also time it with the blooming Valley of Flowers, which is at its peak in July and August.
Travel Tips
For first time travellers, regular walking, stair climbing, or cardio training is recommended as it can help build stamina.
Acclimatisation is crucial, so spend a day in Govindghat or Ghangaria before attempting the final ascent to avoid altitude sickness.
Even in June, evenings can get cold, or even wet, so pack layered clothing, rain gear, comfortable trekking shoes and a basic medical kit.
Stay hydrated, carry light snacks, and avoid alcohol or smoking during the trek.
