Money plants are one of the easiest indoor plants to grow in water. They require minimal care, adapt quickly and can begin developing fresh roots within two weeks under the right conditions. Meanwhile, their trailing green vines also add a refreshing touch to homes, balconies and workspaces.

Start with a healthy money plant vine. Cut a 4–6 inch stem just below a node, which is the small bump where leaves and roots grow. Make sure the cutting has at least 2–3 healthy leaves attached. Remove any leaves near the bottom before placing it in water.

Use a clean glass jar, bottle or transparent container to grow the plant in water. A clear container helps you monitor root growth easily. Fill it with clean, room-temperature water and ensure the stem nodes remain submerged while the leaves stay above the waterline to prevent rotting.

Money plants grow best in bright but indirect sunlight. Keep the container near a window, balcony or well-lit indoor corner. Avoid placing it under harsh direct sunlight for long hours, as excessive heat can damage the leaves and slow down healthy root development.

To keep the plant healthy, change the water every 4–5 days. Fresh water helps prevent bacteria, algae, animal larva and unpleasant smells from developing inside the container. Meanwhile, cleaning the jar occasionally also supports healthier root growth and keeps the plant looking fresh indoors.

With proper light, clean water and regular care, tiny white roots may begin appearing within 10–14 days. Once the roots grow longer and stronger, the money plant will continue thriving in water for months. You can also transfer it into soil later if preferred.
