Nimrat Kaur for Jajaabor on Day 3 Lakmē Fashion Week X FDCI.
A city like Kolkata doesn’t rush to reinvent itself. It evolves, layer by layer. At Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI, that memory took shape through Nimrat Kaur, who stepped onto the runway as the showstopper for Jajaabor – bringing with her the quiet, layered essence of Kolkata.
Dressed in a striking handcrafted ensemble from Jajaabor, Nimrat Kaur embodied the label’s philosophy of blending heritage with modernity. Her look – a gold Jamdani-inspired corset paired with a deconstructed, single-sleeve cutwork jacket and a draped skirt – felt both sculptural and fluid.
The interplay of structure and softness defined the silhouette. Traditional weaving techniques were reinterpreted through contemporary tailoring, creating a piece that felt rooted yet forward-looking. It wasn’t just an outfit. It was a visual translation of the city itself.
Designed by Neelanjan Ghosh and Kanika Sachdev, the collection explored the idea of Kolkata not as a city that has changed, but one that has evolved while holding onto its past. The narrative moved beyond nostalgia. It captured the rhythm of everyday life: the enduring culture of adda, the intellectual pulse, the seamless coexistence of history and modernity. This translated into garments that felt lived-in yet refined.
At its core, the collection was anchored in Bengal’s rich textile traditions. Dhakai Jamdani weaves, delicate hand detailing and restrained patchwork formed the foundation, while fabrics like tissue, organza, silk, Chanderi and denim introduced contrast and structure. The colour palette – gold, ivory, indigo, teal, burgundy and coral – mirrored the city’s quiet vibrancy. It was rich, but never overwhelming; expressive, yet controlled.
What set Jajaabor’s showcase apart was its refusal to romanticise the past. Instead, it presented Kolkata as it exists today – a city that carries its history effortlessly into the present. Through thoughtful silhouettes and tactile storytelling, the collection bridged generations, making tradition feel relevant without losing its authenticity.
With Nimrat Kaur anchoring the narrative on the runway, Jajaabor’s Calcutta Kolkata showcase became more than a collection. It became a reflection of identity, continuity and craft.
