“One of the most significant environmental factors contributing to dry skin in winter is the decrease in humidity. In winter, the air becomes drier, both outdoors and indoors, because cold air holds less moisture than warm air.”

She adds, “When the humidity levels drop, the skin loses its moisture to the dry air through a process known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL). TEWL refers to the evaporation of water from the skin’s surface into the surrounding air. The skin’s outermost layer, the stratum corneum, loses its ability to retain moisture, which causes dryness and flakiness”
