Noughties denim fashion returns with a modern twist for spring style
Denim, a perennial fixture in fashion, is once again undergoing a significant transformation, with this spring’s trends signalling a distinct return to the early 2000s aesthetic. After years dominated by wide-leg silhouettes, the denim landscape is shifting towards a Noughties revival, albeit with a more refined and wearable sensibility.
According to TV stylist and author Nicky Hambleton-Jones, the key to embracing these trends lies not in replicating past styles verbatim, but in a thoughtful reinterpretation. This season sees the resurgence of the mini skirt, bootcut jeans, and low-rise cuts, all reimagined for contemporary wardrobes.
One of the most prominent comebacks is the denim mini skirt, a staple spotted across numerous Paris Fashion Week runways, including Dior’s SS26 collection.
“The return of the denim mini skirt is part of fashion’s ongoing Y2K revival, but it’s also about attitude,” Hambleton-Jones explains. “It’s tied to that carefree confidence, but it’s being styled in a much more considered way now that’s all about contrast.”
To avoid a purely nostalgic look, she advises balancing the shorter hemline with more structured, mature pieces. Think oversized blazers or tailored jackets, similar to the military-inspired designs seen at Dior, paired with boots or ballet flats. Accessories should remain minimal to maintain a modern edge.
The once-maligned double denim, famously dubbed the “Canadian tuxedo” after Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s coordinated appearance at the 2001 American Music Awards, is also firmly back in vogue.
However, this iteration is less about exact matching and more about mixing silhouettes. “Balance and variation are key,” Hambleton-Jones states. She suggests pairing straight-leg jeans with a lighter denim shirt, or combining structured pieces with more relaxed shapes, to prevent the outfit from feeling too uniform.
Introducing a non-denim item, such as a statement bag or accessory, can also provide a welcome contrast. The goal, she says, is “cohesion, not coordination.”
Light-wash denim is another trend making a strong return, evoking the casual, laid-back vibe of Nineties and 2000s grunge, particularly when paired with a barrel silhouette. To elevate this inherently relaxed wash and avoid an overly undone appearance, Hambleton-Jones recommends incorporating contrast.
She suggests pairing casual washes with sophisticated finishes like “cream, navy, chocolate brown and soft grey.” A plain white T-shirt, a slim knitted jumper, or a tailored military jacket can inject structure into an otherwise relaxed ensemble.
Metallic accessories, whether silver or gold, can also help lift the outfit. Furthermore, texture plays a crucial role; combining light-wash denim with smoother fabrics such as leather or satin helps to balance its ruggedness.
Perhaps the most divisive denim trend to re-emerge is low-rise jeans, though the 2026 version is notably more wearable. For those hesitant to embrace the style, Hambleton-Jones advises starting with a mid-low rise rather than an ultra-low cut. “Layering can help,” she notes, suggesting longline base layers and jackets.
“A blazer adds coverage while leaning into the trend.” She also recommends opting for structured denim with a good weight, ideally with a higher cotton content over elastane or polyester, as this will hold its shape better and create a more flattering silhouette.
Wearing the jeans with a heightened shoe, such as chunky trainers or heeled boots, can also lengthen the posture, enhancing the style’s appeal. Dipping a toe into the trend by pairing low-rise jeans with existing wardrobe basics is an easy way to test if it suits your personal style.
