Over 95,000 Suspected Cases: Bangladesh’s Measles Outbreak Reaches All Districts With Children Paying The Price

Bangladesh is facing a severe and rapidly expanding public health crisis as a nationwide measles outbreak continues to overwhelm local healthcare infrastructure. Data from health authorities and the United Nations indicates that the highly contagious virus has spread across all 64 districts, reversing years of successful immunisation efforts.
The outbreak, which escalated sharply in the first half of 2026, has registered more than 95,760 suspected cases and 11,390 laboratory-confirmed infections. Over 680 deaths linked to suspected or confirmed measles symptoms have been recorded, underscoring the severity of the current transmission wave.
Vulnerable Populations Hardest Hit
The demographic impact of the surge reveals that young children are bearing the absolute brunt of the disease, largely due to critical immunity gaps.
- Children Under Five: This group accounts for approximately 81 per cent of all reported cases nationwide.
- Infants Under Nine Months: Densely populated clusters have seen a high proportion of infections in infants who are not yet old enough to receive their routine first dose, leaving them completely unprotected.
- Refugee Context: The transmission has heavily impacted the overcrowded Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char, where high-density living conditions have facilitated rapid person-to-person spread.
Densely populated informal urban settlements within Dhaka, Rajshahi, and Chattogram have emerged as the primary domestic hotspots. The intense influx of patients has placed unprecedented pressure on paediatric units, with major infectious disease hospitals reporting severe overcrowding and bed shortages.
Structural Gaps Driving the Crisis
Public health experts attribute the scale of the epidemic to a gradual accumulation of unvaccinated cohorts over recent years. Disruptions to routine immunisation schedules, alongside a suspension of critical vitamin A supplementation rounds, left millions of children susceptible to severe clinical complications.
Because measles damages the immune system and leaves patients vulnerable to secondary infections like severe pneumonia and diarrhoea, underlying high levels of childhood malnutrition across affected districts have significantly inflated the mortality risk.
Mobilising the Emergency Response
In response to the growing crisis, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, alongside global bodies like UNICEF and the World Health Organization, launched an aggressive emergency outbreak response. Medical staff leave was cancelled across high-burden districts to manage the sudden hospitalisation spike.
A massive, targeted Measles-Rubella (MR) campaign successfully immunised over 18.4 million children, achieving more than 100 per cent of its initial emergency target. While recent epidemiological data suggests that the daily infection rate has finally begun a gradual downward trajectory from its peak, daily case numbers remain high, keeping emergency medical units on high alert.
