Mandya Tourist Spots: With its lush greenery, flowing rivers, waterfalls and more than 108 tourist attractions, Karnataka’s Mandya district remains one of the state’s most popular weekend destinations. However, behind its picturesque landscape lies a growing safety concern, as several popular water bodies continue to witness fatal accidents involving tourists.
District authorities have urged visitors to exercise caution, warning that reckless behaviour in rivers and waterfalls has resulted in numerous deaths and injuries over the years.
Popular Tourist Destination Faces Growing Safety Concerns
Mandya, often referred to as Karnataka’s ‘Sugar Land’, draws large numbers of tourists seeking nature escapes during weekends. Its scenic rivers, waterfalls and reservoirs have made it a favourite destination for families, adventure seekers and nature lovers.
However, officials say the excitement of entering the water without assessing the risks has become one of the leading causes of accidents.
According to local authorities, many visitors ignore repeated warnings from residents and venture into dangerous sections of rivers and waterfalls for swimming or adventure activities, putting their lives at risk.
High-Risk Water Bodies Identified
The district administration has identified several locations where tourists are advised not to enter the water due to the high risk of drowning and accidents. Among the most dangerous sites are Balamuri in Srirangapatna, Muthathi in Malavalli, and the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) backwaters, all of which have witnessed multiple fatal incidents.
Authorities have also warned against swimming in certain lakes, embankments and Visvesvaraya Canal (VC Canal) stretches, where water currents and changing depths can become hazardous.
Administration Strengthens Safety Measures
Following a series of drowning incidents, the Mandya district administration has intensified efforts to improve tourist safety.
Officials are preparing to install additional warning boards and barricades at vulnerable locations while increasing security arrangements at major tourist spots to discourage visitors from entering unsafe areas.
The measures are intended to reduce accidents, particularly during weekends and holiday periods when tourist footfall is at its highest.
