His Role In India’s Freedom Movement
Savarkar founded a secret group called Abhinav Bharat Society to encourage young Indians to fight against British rule. During his time at Fergusson College in Pune, he began organising students and spreading nationalist ideas. Later, while in London, he started the Free India Society and wrote The First War of Independence, where he described the 1857 revolt as a planned fight for freedom.
He supported the idea of Swadeshi and urged people to boycott foreign goods. He believed Indians should depend on their own products and skills.
Savarkar was arrested in 1910 for anti-British activities. He tried to escape in Marseilles but was caught again. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison and sent to the Cellular Jail in the Andaman Islands. He spent many years there before being released in 1937.
