Rediscover the Joy of Letter-Writing at Journal’s Letters and Lattes
Santacruz’s neighbourhood café, Journal, has earned a reputation for its thoughtful, community-driven experiences that extend far beyond great coffee from vinyl brunches and creative workshops to matcha ceremonies and slow, art-filled afternoons. On 23 November, the café invites guests to rediscover the lost art of letter-writing through Letters and Lattes, an intimate gathering dedicated to handwritten expression, reflection, and meaningful conversation.
The event will be hosted by Shrutee Choudhary, founder of Letters from a Better Place, Poet of the Year 2024, and Midday India’s Woman of the Year 2018. As the author of A Garage Sale of Lovelorn Things, Shrutee brings her literary warmth and experience, guiding guests through reflective, gentle exercises that make letter-writing feel both personal and communal.
Guests begin the afternoon with their choice of cappuccino or cold coffee and curated letter-writing kits. The session opens with a short introduction by Shrutee, setting intentions for stillness. Each guest fills out a “Needs & Offers” card, noting what they hope to express and what they may want to receive from their pen pal. Pairings are done through a name draw, guided by poetic phrase cards that help create thoughtful and unexpected connections.
Participants then exchange letters and write freely with the help of writing prompts placed on each table. Towards the end, guests may (optionally) share excerpts or reflections before exchanging their completed letters. The experience concludes with a short letter written to their future selves, which Journal will mail to each participant a month later, serving as a gentle reminder of their thoughts, promises, or emotions from the day.
Throughout the event, guests may order from Journal’s comforting menu featuring the Mocha Crunch Overnight Oat Jar, Katsu Sandos, Asian Salads, and slow-brewed favourites like the Woody Spiced Coffee, Hojicha Latte, and Jamun Coffee Tonic.
Letters and Lattes continues Journal’s mission of cultivating spaces where people can reconnect with themselves and with each other one letter at a time.
