Hafeez slams PCB for compromising on India’s participation in Champions Trophy | The Express Tribune
Former Pakistan Test captain Mohammad Hafeez has strongly criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for accepting the hybrid model for the upcoming Champions Trophy, particularly pointing out the board’s stance on India’s participation.
Speaking to the media at the HPC Oval Ground at National Stadium, Hafeez lamented that, unfortunately, the PCB initially opposed India’s refusal to visit Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, only to later accept the decision to host India’s matches at a neutral venue.
Hafeez noted that the PCB had not adhered to its original principled stance while highlighting that India’s refusal to play in Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, starting from February 19, marks a significant shortcoming. Furthermore, the absence of an ICC event in Pakistan since the 1996 World Cup raises many questions.
However, he acknowledged that the Champions Trophy being held in Pakistan is a positive development and that the country should send out a strong, optimistic message about it.
Hafeez also praised young batter Saim Ayub, calling him an asset to Pakistan cricket. He acknowledged that injuries are part of the game but emphasized that Saim Ayub’s recovery should be managed properly, expressing confidence that he would be fit in time for the Champions Trophy.
The all-rounder, also known as ‘Professor,’ went on to say that Saim Ayub could serve Pakistan cricket for the next 10 to 15 years.
Hafeez also expressed hope for the return of senior batter Fakhar Zaman to the national team, noting that if Fakhar Zaman makes a comeback for ICC’s mega event, it would be a positive sign for Pakistan.
As the coach of defending champions SNGPL in the President’s Cup, Hafeez stressed the importance of domestic cricket but criticized the current practice of sending players directly to striker camps from first-class cricket, stating that cricketers who attend such camps should not automatically be included in the PSL.
Hafeez expressed disappointment over the lack of facilities for teams in the ongoing President’s Cup, particularly at the HPC Oval Ground in National Stadium.
He noted that players faced difficulties with inadequate drinking water, no proper dressing rooms, and substandard washroom facilities.
He pointed out that the PCB seemed to focus entirely on making the Champions Trophy a successful event while overlooking the facilities for domestic cricket, urging the board to realign its priorities.
