James Gunn and the cast of his upcoming Max animated series, Creature Commandos, took the stage at New York Comic Con, promising a unique and dark entry into the DC Universe.
Gunn, executive producer and writer, was joined by fellow executive producer Dean Lorey and voice cast members Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Zoë Chao, Steve Agee, Maria Bakalova, Alan Tudyk, and Sean Gunn.
“We want this to be very different from what Superman is going to be,” Gunn said. “It’s a connected universe, but we’re not imposing any overall aesthetic.”
Lorey described the series’ aesthetic as “Eastern European, grounded, but with style… really dark tones.”
Gunn shared the series’ origins, saying, “I wrote the scripts without a deal… I love monsters. I love Frankenstein, the story of Bride of Frankenstein.”
The cast teased their characters, with Tudyk promising “you’ll see where everybody came from, their origins, and it’s terrifying.”
Gunn highlighted Indira Varma’s voice work as the Bride and Viola Davis’s return as Amanda Waller.
“She grounded it so well, and she’s so incredible in the show,” Gunn said.
Harbour discussed Frankenstein’s character, saying, “It’s definitely its own take… a familiar theme, but a very original take.”
Grillo joked about a steamy scene with Bakalova, saying, “It was fairly traumatic” to watch with his 16-year-old son.
Gunn confirmed plans to see some characters in both animated and live-action formats.
“We want people to be able to come in blind and then be totally excited about it,” Gunn emphasized.
The series will roll out in a Lost-inspired format, exploring each character’s backstory.
