Shania Twain reveals the story behind her romance with husband Frédéric

Shania Twain has opened up about how she found love again after the end of her first marriage.

The country star, 60, spoke about the painful time during an appearance on BBC Radio 4‘s Desert Island Discs.

Twain had separated from music producer Robert “Mutt” Lange in 2008 after learning he had allegedly been having an affair with her close friend and assistant, Marie-Anne Thiébaud.

She and Marie-Anne’s former husband, Swiss businessman Frédéric Thiébaud, then supported each other through the heartbreak and tied the knot.

Twain said it was Frédéric who first told her about the affair.

“Fred takes the blinders off and tells me what’s going on,” she recalled. “I didn’t believe him. I thought he was imagining it.”

She said she later realised the affair was not going to end.

“So Fred and I both collapsed, and at some point we just had to let it go,” she said. As they helped each other through the difficult time, their friendship turned into love.

“We found each other,” Twain said. “When I accepted there was no hope, I discovered what a beautiful person he was.”

The singer has previously spoken about how deeply the breakup affected her.

“There were days I didn’t really care if tomorrow came,” she told AARP in 2020. She also credited Frédéric with helping her get through one of the hardest periods of her life.

“Survival is everything,” she said. “I found a way out.”

Twain and Lange, who share son Eja, finalised their divorce in 2010 after 14 years of marriage.

Later that year, Twain became engaged to Frédéric. The couple married in Puerto Rico on New Year’s Day in 2011.
