Slovakia’s prime minister, Robert Fico, was in “life-threatening” condition after being shot on Wednesday, according to his government.

A statement posted to Fico’s Facebook page said he was being transported to a hospital by helicopter and that the “next few hours” would be decisive.

The incident took place in the town of Handlova, northeast of the capital, Bratislava. The prime minister had been greeting members of the public outside after a government meeting at the Palace of Culture. Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots fired. Photographs from the scene showed security officers putting Fico into a black Mercedes immediately afterward.
