Charli XCX has voiced her support for Matty Healy, lead singer of The 1975, following a bold gesture that ignited controversy in Malaysia.

During a performance at Kuala Lumpur’s Good Vibes music festival, Matty shared a kiss with bandmate Ross MacDonald, sparking outrage in a country where same-s*x relationships are illegal.

In a conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, Charli praised Matty’s daring move. “I think it’s a little divisive, but I think great art is divisive,” she said.

The pop sensation emphasized her admiration for Matty’s willingness to take risks. “I just really enjoy people who take a risk in terms of what they’re putting out there artistically.”

Charli, who collaborated with Matty on her album Crash, expressed her deep respect for him. “He’s like my brother now… I have an endless amount of respect for him as a songwriter and him as a person.”

However, The 1975 is now facing legal repercussions, with festival organizers seeking $2.4 million in damages for allegedly violating contract rules.

Guidelines from Malaysia’s Central Agency for the Application for Foreign Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes prohibited “kissing, kissing a member of the audience or carrying out such actions among themselves.”

Court documents claim Matty and the band were aware of these restrictions and agreed to abide by them.

The lawsuit also targets Matty’s on-stage drinking, undressing, and political commentary, staples of The 1975’s performances.
