Benicio Del Toro tapped for first-ever lead TV comedy role as he joins new Apple TV+ series

Benicio Del Toro, a star of the big screen, is best known for his dramatic roles. However, now he is taking a sharp turn.

According to Variety, he is set to feature in his first lead comedy series role, starring opposite comedy legend Ben Stiller in Apple TV+’s upcoming series Protective Custody.

Del Toro’s casting in the prison comedy will reunite him with the Night at the Museum star after they both starred in Escape at Dannemora.

Though details about the actor’s role have been kept under wraps.

On the creative team, Mike Judge, Steve Hely, and Dave King will serve as co-writers and co-showrunners.

While Judge will also direct the show, Stiller, in addition to starring, will executive produce the show under his Red Hour company.

The actor, meanwhile, is a three-time Oscar nominee. He has several hit films under his belt, including 2001’s Traffic.

Meanwhile, Protective Custody’s logline reads, “It follows a disgraced financier (Stiller) accused of massive fraud who is thrown into protective custody, where he must navigate prison politics, salvage his reputation, and confront the consequences of his actions while awaiting trial.”
