SUKKUR: In a devastating incident, a grade 17 female lecturer became a victim of the shabby tradition of Karo Kari in New Saeedabad tehsil of Sindh’s District Matiari.

Karo-Kari is a type of premeditated honour killing, primarily committed against women who are thought to have brought dishonour to their family by engaging in pre-marital or extra-marital relations.

According to the reports, Imdad Jamali shot dead his wife, Afshan Jamali, at the Bakar Jamalia Higher Secondary School.

Police reached at the spot and arrested the suspect, who in his confessional statement told the police that he shot dead his wife over a charge of Karo Kari.

He further said that he had married Afshan a few years ago, accusing her of having relations with a man and used to meet him at different places.

In his statement, he told a police that he tried to convince her and also approached her parents, but she did not change her mind, after which he shot her dead.

Station House officer New Saeedabad Karam Ali Jumani said that confession of the suspect was recorded and said that a first information report (FIR) has not been registered as of yet.

The victim’s father, Haji Muhammad Jamal — who lives in Dubai — held the husband, his father Wazir Jamali, and brother Darya Khan responsible for the murder, saying he would name them in the FIR.

He said that they had greed for property, claiming his daughters did not have any extra-marital affair with anyone. Haji Muhammad said that he had sent Rs200,000 to his daughter a fortnight ago, adding that Rs100,000 was Afshan’s salary.

The father claimed he had built a bungalow worth Rs5 million but the suspect had asked for more money from the victim to which she told him the money was in the bank.

However, Imdad had pressurised his wife to give him Rs50,000 but when she refused, he fired at her and killed her, said the father.

Haji Muhammad said his daughter was a lecturer at Bakar Jamali Higher Secondary School and passed the Sindh Public Service Commission Examination of subject specialists six months ago and got a job in the same field.

The father said that he and other family members were residing in Dubai, where he is an engineer in an airline company and his son is a pilot.

He said that his deceased daughter also resided in Dubai before marriage. She had married Imdad with whom she had three children.
