Starting your day with the right foods can set the tone for your energy and digestion. Dr Sujit Nair, Consultant – Medical Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Endoscopy at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, says in a feature published in the Indian Express that the idea that certain foods should never be eaten on an empty stomach is often overstated. For most healthy individuals, items like apples, citrus fruits, pineapple, tea, coffee, or even fruit juices are not inherently harmful. What really matters is your digestive sensitivity and underlying health conditions.

Citrus Fruits & Pineapple: Rich in natural acids, these fruits may trigger heartburn or discomfort in people with acid reflux or gastritis. For most, they remain nutritious and safe.

Raw vegetables: Raw greens are packed with insoluble fibre, which can be tough on an empty stomach. Eating them first thing often leads to gas, bloating, and discomfort.

Tea & Coffee: Caffeine stimulates acid production. Some may experience acidity, bloating, or jitters when consumed on an empty stomach. Those who tolerate caffeine well usually face no issues.

Spicy Foods: Spices can irritate the stomach lining in sensitive individuals, worsening reflux, gastritis, or abdominal discomfort. Best avoided if you’re prone to indigestion.

Fruit Juices: Fresh juices provide vitamins but lack fibre. On an empty stomach, they can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar and may not keep you full for long.

Sugary Foods and Pastries: Sugary treats like doughnuts or sweetened cereals trigger a quick blood sugar spike, followed by a sharp crash – leaving you drained and craving more.

What to Eat Instead, Dr Nair suggests starting your morning with a balanced mix of hydration, protein, fibre, and healthy fats: Fresh fruits, soaked nuts, curd, sprouts, eggs, vegetable-based dishes, and traditional meals like moong chilla.
